The receiver listens to satellites
A GPS receiver in the vehicle picks up timing signals from multiple satellites orbiting the earth and uses the small differences between them to calculate a precise position.
Position is matched to stored map data
That raw position is then matched against a digital map stored on the vehicle's system, a process sometimes called "map matching," so the system can show you on the correct road.
Routes are calculated using road data
When you enter a destination, the system calculates a route using the stored road network, including speed limits, turn restrictions, and road types.
Some features need extra connectivity
Live traffic, points-of-interest search, and other online features generally require a data connection layered on top of the core GPS positioning.
